NORTHAMPTON - If you had the resources, what would you do to make your community a healthier place to live, work, and play?
This is the question Cooley Dickinson Hospital is asking mid-Pioneer Valley residents who are interested in building healthier communities. Cooley Dickinson is pleased to offer a chance to help put residents’ ideas into action.
The Healthy Communities Committee, a subcommittee of the Cooley Dickinson Board of Trustees, oversees the distribution of grant money and is excited to announce funding for the following pilot projects:
• Easthampton Tobacco Treatment and Prevention
• Easthampton Healthy Eating/Active Living
• Latino Access
• Youth Substance Abuse Prevention
Grant applications are due Friday, Jan. 17, 2014. To apply and to learn more, visit http://bit.ly/1j3iWK6 or the Pilot Project Grants page.
Of the grant opportunities, Michael A. Tautznik, Mayor of Easthampton, said he "is excited to see these initiatives in our community and grateful for [Cooley Dickinson Hospital's] support."
Grant funding is part of a broader effort by Cooley Dickinson Hospital and its community partners to assess the health needs of mid-Pioneer Valley residents and to provide opportunities for communities to address the root causes of poor health, before those root causes reach the acute stage requiring hospital treatment.
Investing in community initiatives that seek to increase healthy eating and physical activity can make an impact on the high rates of chronic disease and obesity that are prevalent in the region.
Cooley Dickinson Hospital is required to set aside funds to support community health initiatives as part of its agreement with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to approve the purchase of major cancer treatment equipment.
